March 2026 ********** End
of Season Report So another season has passed with mixed
results for the season. It was a successful year on the River
Delph with access from the beginning of the season right through until mid November which is a first for many years. Good results for plenty of decent sized
Roach and Rudd with fish upto 2lb on occasion along
with good reports for Carp, Tench and Bream. From October
1st the Pike anglers enjoyed consistent good sport through to mid November before rising river levels impacted the
catch rates. Many double figure bags of Pike with regular fish topping double
figures. Sadly once the levels rose the chance of fishing the river was
generally at an end for most anglers although one or two hardy members
continued trying to beat the conditions. Regrettably the same cannot be said for
the Old Bedford/Counter Drain which did produce some early sport with good
catches of Roach and Tench, conditions quickly
deteriorated and stayed pretty poor for the rest of the season. The
constant upstream rise and fall of the water levels often up to 12” or more
in a day along with crystal clear water served to leave the area almost devoid
of fish for the majority of the season with the closing months being drastic.
In some areas it was difficult to find more than 2-3ft of water. It was felt
that most of this water was at best brackish and resulted in fish being
forced upstream. Where is this long promised dredging of the drain, always
promised but never materialising always with some excuse for it not to
happen…. Anglers struggled to get a bite let
alone a fish and the winter show of tench failed
completely. Some pike showed in the latter part of
the season with fish being recorded between 18-21lb+ but again sport was well
down on previous seasons. Fish that were caught were as a rule
long and thin with very little belly, this was the same on both rivers, is
there a related problem with the pike I wonder. At the time of writing no increase in
costs is anticipated in the coming season and hopefully new books will be
available within the next couple of weeks. Let us look forward to the coming season
and hope that conditions on the Old Bedford/CounterDrain
improve on this past season. Alan ********** Update 7th
June 2025 ********** Swim
Clearance Work Parties are planned for the
following dates and anybody who is able is encouraged to turn out and help. 1.
Saturday 14th June 2025 from 9am until approximately 12.30pm
meeting at the old village hall. Planning on swim clearance and weed raking
on the Old Bedford. Some equipment
will be provided but if you have drag lines or rakes then please bring these
along. Alan is not available but Shaun will be on hand to direct the work. 2. Saturday
5th July 2025 from 9am until approximately
12.30pm. Again meet at the old village hall. This is more directed at the River Delph where it is hoped we can
carry out some work on clearing some of the willow growth on the far bank as
well as swim clearance. This will be a more challenging environment but could
be hugely beneficial to members. If you have access to a chain saw that would be a great help. These works parties are for your benefit , WE NEED YOUR
HELP. Please turn up where possible
. Refreshments will be provided afterwards
in the Lamb & Flag for all
those able to help. ******************************************************** ********** Update 8th

April 2024 ********** 2023/24 Season Summary The 2023/24 season has been a really divided season but was
balanced out to some degree by having full access to the River Delph for the
first time in 6 years. Early season fishing on the Old Bedford was rendered almost
impossible due to the prolific weed growth in the river with the weed
covering most of the surface area. However for those that tried, the
River Delph produced some excellent sport with Roach and Rudd from moderate
to large specimens being prolific in most areas. Early Autumn flooding put an end to fishing on the River Delph
in late October just as our Pike season was getting underway with some really
good catches as I’m sure our visitors from Cumbria will testify.
Thankfully at this point, the weed started to die back in the Old Bedford which allowed
pike anglers to switch rivers although fluctuating water levels at
times made this river hard. Sport for the Pike has been generally good with quite a few
fish in the low 20’s and lots in the mid to low teens. The season finished with a flurry of Tench
being caught on the Old Bedford with one angler managed 10 to the net for in
excess of 50lb as well as losing a few fish. No Big Tench
but a fish of 6lb 5oz is a good fish. Regrettably the continuous flooding (in excess of 80days road
closure) has meant no further sport on the River Delph. So a mixed season with plenty of action when conditions
allowed it on both rivers. Let’s hope we get better river access for 2024/25. I look forward to seeing plenty of you on the bank. Alan ********** Update 20th
